Moles

Photo of a moleThe most important type of damage caused by moles is the contamination with soil of grass cut for silage. Such contamination is a major cause of poor fermentation and preservation of silage. The feeding value of the silage is reduced, mainly because of its low acceptability to stock and the breakdown and loss of nutrients. In extreme cases silage contaminated with soil can cause severe scouring in stock.

Mole runs made under the drills of roots and grain crops may cause the crops to wilt, or even die. Molehills may cover considerable areas of meadow or cornland and cause damage to the knives of mowing machines. On grazing land, an appreciable area of pasture is sometimes covered by soil thrown up by moles; this reduces its feeding value.

Wild Rabbits

Photo of a wild rabbitWild rabbits have once again become a major pest of British agriculture. Serious losses of crops as a result of rabbit damage are being reported Over the country as a whole, rabbit numbers are at about 30% of their pre-myxomatosis levels but much higher numbers can occur locally, in suitable habitats. This continuing increase is due to a number of factors, including the reduced effect of myxomatosis.

The need for financial inputs and optimum timing is accepted for the control of other crop pests and diseases. Rabbit control should be regarded in the same way. It is false economy to pay for crop protection with insecticides, fungicides and herbicides, and still leave the crop vulnerable to damage by rabbits.
