Birds have always been considered an important and attractive part of our wild life. In both urban and rural districts much pleasure is gained from feral birds. In urban environments and in some areas their presence is actively encouraged. |
However, when it comes to preservation of the country's buildings, the prolonged presence of feral bird infestations causes a number of severe problems. Bird droppings deface and slowly deteriorate the surfaces of buildings, monuments and statues. This is caused mainly by the corrosive effect of acidic secretions produced by fungi that live within the excreta. Feral bird colonies carry and transmit many diseases to man. They attract associated insects and parasites which harbour in their nests and excreta, which can release foul odours, become unsightly and block gutters. |
